Jason was remembering how Luigi had picked him up. It was the second or third day after he’d
arrived in Australia. He remembered
making love with Luigi, and how vulnerable and fragile Luigi had seemed
afterwards, as they lay in bed. It had
been the first time since Brent had died that he’d made love, and he’d
forgotten how good it felt to bring pleasure and comfort to another and also to
receive pleasure and comfort from another.
He remembered how Luigi had wept after sex and how he’d persuaded the
other man to tell him about how he feared that straight macho-acting men like
Jason would win his heart and then desert him.
Luigi hadn’t told Jason then, but he’d been thinking of Cody when he
talked about how straight or bisexual men weren’t to be trusted. The whole disaster of Luigi’s relationship
with Cody had only emerged later. Jason
remembered how their fragile friendship had strengthened and deepened, until
Luigi had become one of the people in his life who were truly important to
him. Two
of the most important people in my life are in this car, he thought. And another
is on the mountain up ahead terrified for his life. He was so afraid that Luigi would be killed. He’d been angry with the ineptitude and
homophobia of the police, but now that was gone. Instead, his anger and rage had hardened into
ice, a determination that he would do whatever he could to save Luigi, without
letting his anger make him do stupid, ineffective, impulsive actions. He would save Luigi and Cody and he would
deal with the Killer. Even if right now
he had no idea how he was going to do this.

Jason smiled at her and then, moving
her almost to tears, put his head against her neck and kissed her, before
enveloping her in a tight hug. He moved
over to her left, and lay down next to her, his arm over her torso. She was lying face up, with both men facing
towards her and each other. Jason
reached over and ruffled Keith’s hair. His beam at his
friend and Keith’s glowing response might have made her jealous, before. All
she could think of, though, was how she had found two someones to love. She didn’t know what would happen in the
future, but she was ready to launch herself into the current, hoping, confident
even, that it would take her to happiness.

“Laugh at us, would you?” growled
Keith and he bent down to her. In a moment, the thong was pulled back, and his
tongue was inside the folds of her body.
Jason kissed her on the lips, his
breathing fast, his eyes blazing. She
closed her eyes giving herself over to the sensations from her body, the
shining flood of pleasure which filled her from head to toe. Keith moved his mouth slowly up from her cunt
to her breast. Each moment’s delay from
climax was unbearable. Jason took
Keith’s place at her pussy. She was
close to coming.
“Wait!” she said.
Keith lifted his mouth from her
breast, and Jason from her groin.
“What?” asked Keith.
“I want you inside me,” she replied.
Keith smiled, a smile which flipped
her heart over, and reached for the top drawer of bedside cabinet. He took out two condoms, handed one to Jason and
tore the other one open. He slathered
his cock with lube, and passed the bottle back to Jason, who was just behind
him, his eyes rapt.
He inched into her, waiting for her to
clamp tight, ready to withdraw if she did.
He could feel the velvet silkiness of her insides. Jason turned Keith’s head to one side and
kissed him intensely, then bent forward to kiss Esmé. Knowing now that he wouldn’t hurt her, Keith
began to drive into her. Each thrust
rubbed her already wet clitoris, jolting her into spasms of intense
pleasure. Still she hadn’t
climaxed. Keith’s eyes were closed, his
head back, his mouth open in ecstasy, as he speeded up his hip movements.
“I’m—ah—oh God!—it’s ….” And Esmé
came, great shuddering jolts to her body, her mind empty of everything except
the white flame of her pleasure. Almost
simultaneously, Keith gasped and arched his back as he came too.

Luigi saw it in his
face. “He’ll be your friend too, you
know. He’s a top bloke. He’s kind. He’s been through pain and loss himself, and
it’s made him … better. I think before
Brent killed himself, he was maybe a little arrogant.” Perhaps,
he thought to himself, it was that trace of
arrogance which first drew me to him.
My need to be humiliated by a straight manly bloke. Well, he thought with determination, I’m putting that behind me. I’m going to
make a success of my relationship with Cody.
I am.
Cody didn’t answer. He knew Luigi was right. Despite that, it seemed to him, somewhere in
is darkest imaginings, that he was alone, that Philippa had left him, and that
Luigi’s heart, whatever he said, was given to another. I’ve
totally screwed up my life, he thought bitterly. A fuck
up. A failure.
Luigi reached out brushed
a finger across Cody’s lips, softly and gently.
His dark olive black eyes were warm and loving. He didn’t speak, but all the same, Cody felt
better.

That’s
all very well,
thought Esmé, but how can I trust
you? Both of you? Either of you?
All right, Keith was
bi. And maybe if he hadn’t had to live
on the streets he would never have found out about his gay side. And maybe not. Maybe he was always going to find out he was
attracted to men. She knew he loved her,
well, for some meaning of ‘love’. She
was very mistrustful of the glittery shimmering artefact which everybody
proclaimed as romantic love. White
wedding dresses and soppy romantic kissing and lurve. But at the same time, she needed it, desperately, because it
somehow showed her that her own life was worth something, that she was worth something. As Jason—he was lovely. He had a kind smile,
and a beaut hunky muscular body, and his eyes were alive and interesting. Does he
love Keith? she thought. Really and truly? Will he just fuck off later when he’s sick of
us all and leave us in the lurch? Part of her rejoiced at this intriguing prospect,
but then she squashed it mercilessly. Keith would be terribly hurt if Jason
went away. Keith loved him. And though Jason loved Brent, he was obviously
fond—very fond—of Keith.
And yet, they were also friends. Could you have friends if you were also
having sex with them? Keith had taught
her how to make love without pain. He
was kind, like Jason was kind, and that was worth something. Anyway, what did it matter? She was in love with Keith and that was a
simple fact and spending some time
with him was far better than not having him in her life at all. It was enough for now. She must be glad and not greedy. She was happier now than she’d been for
years.

“Key, Eleanor—this is Graeme, alias
Amantha Masterton and “—he gave Graeme a sly grin— “Endeavour Lambano. Graeme, you know Keith, and Eleanor is my
landlady and friend.”
“Honoured to meet the creator of Lord
Balincourt,” exclaimed Eleanor, and Keith gave Graeme a huge smile and said,
“Awesome!”
“Would you care for a glass of
champagne, Graeme?”
“I’d love some.”
“I put your wine on the sideboard,
Key,” said Jason. “Looks rather nice.”
“I purloined it from The Lord Grey. Tom won’t mind.”
“What do you write under your
Endeavour Lambano pseudonym, Graeme?” asked Eleanor.
Graeme cast a desperate look at Jason,
and said, “Um, I write …”
Jason cut across him. “Scintillating hot gay novels.”
“Romantic, too,” observed Keith.
“So you’re at heart a romantic,
Graeme?” asked Eleanor, placidly.
“Yes, I think so. I believe in love.”
“Me too,” said Eleanor. “And kindness. They’re the most important things.”
“Yes,” said Keith. “Exactly.”
They smiled at each other in perfect understanding.

“That was very intense.” Cody’s
head was snuggled into Luigi’s shoulder.
Luigi wondered for a moment that he had become the strong one in their
relationship. Him. An effeminate queen. Cody
was Mr Macho. Mr Muscles. Mr Straight-Acting. By rights it should have been his head snug on Cody’s shoulder, him protected by Cody. Not the other way round. But Dio!
he would protect him. They would find the killer and deal with
him. A thousand years of Calabrian
peasant ancestors showed in his tight mouth and hard eyes.
“What?” asked Cody, startled.
“What what?”
“You tensed up.”
“I was thinking …” his phone rang.
“…hang on a tick.”
It was Colin, the
policeman from Mt Macedon.
Luigi felt
absurdly, shy, as if the other man could see down the phone line and see them
both lying on the sofa in the aftermath of sex, covered with sweat and cum and
lube, arm-in-arm, sated with love-making.
“Oh, hi!”
“I’m on my way into
the city.”
Ridiculously,
Luigi felt that he didn’t want him now.
“Oh, good!” he said with fake enthusiasm.
“Is it a bad
time? I have to do this in my off-time.”
“Oh! No!
This is perfect.”

“Your turn”, said Cody, reaching for Luigi’s hand and tugging him up off
the floor.
He moved his head towards Luigi’s cock.
“No,” said Luigi. “I want a good
schoolboy wire pull.” He grinned at
Cody. “Use that lube. It’s pretty good.”
So Cody squirted some lube on his hand and, his eyes never leaving
Luigi’s face, he cupped Luigi’s cock in his hand and began to stroke it, slowly
and carefully. Luigi was right. Having Cody
pull his wire, his hand slick and supple with lube, was special. He could have gazed at Cody’s flushed sweaty
face for ever, but then Cody leaned in to kiss him, still stroking and
caressing his cock. Cody had always been
a good kisser—Luigi tried not to think of how much practice he’d had—and all
Luigi could feel was the warm urgent mouth and its mobile tongue and the hot
slippery hand which squeezed his penis.
His pleasure built and built but still he hadn’t climaxed. Then Cody reached up with his other hand and
twisted Luigi’s nipple. Luigi felt his
prostate ache so intensely it was almost painful, and his jism jetted all over
Cody’s face.
“Jeez, you’re good
at that, Coads.”
Cody’s smile was gentle, but it reached his eyes.
Good! thought Luigi. It’s getting better. He’s getting better.

Luigi paused the DVD. He shifted
sideways on the sofa to look directly at Cody. “When I first met Richard, my lover—my husband,
really—he wanted me to fuck him because he couldn’t get it up. He was quite elderly. And he offered to pay. Which means that I was once a whore, Lou. He wanted me to be a regular, and in the end
we became a couple. I don’t think I was
ever ‘in love’ with him. But I did love
him. A lot, as it happens. He was my friend, my lover, someone who was
consistently kind and generous with me.
He never asked if I was tricking with other men. And in the end I stopped. In the beginning I did. I felt I needed the sex, the excitement of
the chase. You know how it goes. Will
he, won’t he? Is he, isn’t he? Someone
new. Someone exciting. But, in the end with Richard, yeah, the sex
wasn’t stunning. But we were happy. It was so nice to be loved for myself, and it
was …. beaut … to love him back. After
he died, I went cruising again, and the sex was hot but it wasn’t enough. There was a missing ingredient. And that was mattering to someone. Having
someone to cuddle. I matter to Jace and Keith. And I matter to you. And I need that.”

“I know,” replied Luigi. And he
did. He remembered Cody’s reaction when
he had cut him out of his life. The way
he had sobbed as he walked away from the flat.
“Thing is … how many women will be OK with you having a bloke in your
life? A lover? Even if they know about it right from the
beginning?”
“I know. It’s …. Yeah, I know. Thank you, Lou.”
“For what? I chucked you out and
you went on to pick up the murderer.
Thanks aren’t needed, mate.”
“I deserved it. I lied to you and to her. I lied and lied and lied. I pretended one thing and did another.”
Luigi didn’t know how to react to this bitter outburst. It was true.
And it was that which had so hurt and angered him. The deceit.
The lies. Would have been so
angry if he’d known from the first that Cody was married? That his wife would come first? He tried to imagine whether he would have
fallen in love if he’d known Cody was married.
“Cody, you can’t go back and change what you did. All you can do is try not to do it again.”
“No Try not. Do … or do not. There is no try.” Cody’s voice was solemn.
Luigi burst out laughing. Cody
looked at him and then also started laughing.
Luigi nearly drove off the side of the road he was laughing so much.
“Tool!” he said, still laughing.
“I know, let’s get the video tonight.
And a bottle of champers. ” Luigi said, still chuckling. “The
Force is strong in you, Yody.”
The crisis was over. For now. But both knew it would return.

“Lou, love. I’m sorry.” Cody’s voice shook.
“For what?”
“For hurting you so much.”
Yeah, well, thought Luigi, with a bitterness which left a taste in his mouth and
made him swallow, I’ve got to get past
this. Somehow.
“Relationships—marriages—strengthen through crises. If you work at it,” he said, trying hard to
conceal his cynical doubts. “So let’s
work at it.”
“What about …. ?”
“What?”
“Jason and Keith?”
“We’re friends.”
“And what am I?”
“When you … when I found out about … that you were married … I was
lonely. And sad. And … Jace and Key are kind and generous and
loving. They’re my friends. They’ve got my back. We love each other. Not like I loved you. But like friends or, maybe”—Luigi didn’t have
a brother so he didn’t know, in truth—“like brothers.”
“But you fuck them.”
“Yeah. Just like you were doing with me and other blokes
while you were still married,” Luigi
reminded him tartly.
“I know,” mumbled Cody, his head turned away. “It’s just …. I’m afraid … I’m …”
Luigi was immediately ashamed of his anger. Cody had been abducted, raped, terrorised and
had escaped murder by the tiniest margin.
He needed compassion not to be shouted at.

As they drove down the freeway into the city, Cody spoke, carefully, in a
tone calculated not to be aggressive or disagreeable. “Lou, love, I dunno how homo I am.”
Luigi sighed to himself. Not this again, he thought. “Yeah, I know,” he said aloud. Don’t I
just!
“How do your mates Jason and Keith cope?” Cody asked, his voice and his
whole demeanour humble.
I don’t want him to be grateful
and humble, thought Luigi. I want him to be confident and strong. Jeez! I’m so mixed up. I liked him better when he was arrogant and
charming. What a tool I am! Always
looking for a man who’ll do me down and desert me in the end! Idiot!
“Why don’t we ask them?” he said out loud, trying not to show his
disparate feelings. “They’re nice
blokes, Coads. They’re not afraid to
talk about stuff. Both of them have been
through very bad things … and it’s made them … I dunno …. Wiser. Kinder. Thing is, Coads love, I’m a homo
through and through. There is no way I
could get it up with a woman.” Cody put his hand on Luigi’s knee and muttered
something. Luigi ploughed on. “But Jace and Key? Well, I think Key is maybe more straight than
gay. He has sex with men because he
likes sex. But also, I think he’s half
in love with Jason. And Jason is still in love with his guy in
England who killed himself …” Cody murmured something, but again Luigi overrode
it. He wanted to say this. “… and I
think he’s more gay than straight but he has had girlfriends, he said. He likes
sex too, but what he wants is … love.
What he had with his guy in England.”
“D’you think he’ll find it? Again,
I mean.”
“I dunno. He’s very fond of me and
Keith. I dunno that it’s love, though. What he had with his cricket player was. It was special.” Luigi was silent for a while, negotiating a
difficult intersection with traffic lights and two tram routes. “Maybe there is just one or two great loves
in your life, Cody. Maybe all the others
are different. Not that you don’t love
them but when you are in love it’s an obsession. Almost like a mania. A madness.
A heavenly madness while it lasts, but definitely not completely sane.”

Outside there was the muted late
night hum of the traffic. A voice rose
up mysteriously from the street, its message inaudible. The last tram pinged its bell at an errant
car. A sash window was slammed
down. A distant dog barked.
They lay in each other’s arms.
Her eyes were wet, and so, she saw
in the light from the window, were his.
“Silly,” he said kindly, gruffly. “Sex is supposed to make you happy.”
She smiled through the tears. “I am,” she whispered.
“Mai too.”
His eyes drooped closed. She didn’t sleep for ages, watching patterns
of light on the ceiling as cars or pedestrians went by, feeling the drift of
the thin curtains in the breeze as if they were on her own skin.
Whatever happens now, she thought, even
if he leaves me for someone else, it doesn’t matter.
It was just four months later that
Jason started work at the pub, and she met him for the first time.

“Nao,” he said at last. He was silent for a while. “It sounds loike Oi’m lookin’ ta get the best
of baoth worlds. But Oi can’t make a
promise Oi can’t kaip.”
“What can you promise?”
“That Oi love ya and will go on
lovin’ ya. That aiven if Oi slaip with
other blaokes, Oi won’t slaip with women. Except you. And whatever happens, Oi’m still ya
friend. And we naid friends. More’n anything.”
He was still holding her hands. She said, “We’ll try and see, OK. I can’t make promises I can’t keep either.” She felt his hands tighten then relax, and
his eyes gleamed.
“So would ya loik to, naow?”
“That’s all you’re interested in.”
“I have news for you, sista,
that’s all any man is
interested in.”
“Somewhere out there my prince is
waiting,” said Esmé piously. “Meanwhile, I’ll make do with the pauper. The sex-crazed paper.”
“I can get a pea to put under the
mattress,” offered Keith, his eyes sparkling, struggling to keep his expression
disinterested and professional.
“Your mattress? Huh!
Why bother?”

She was wearing a dress, a summer
dress, floral and bright in a thin fabric.
He brushed the bottom of the dress up, and gripped her round her
hips. He slipped his hand down the front
of her thong and into the warm folds of her body. He didn’t stop kissing her as her caressed
her. As her body began to respond, her
mind was free of any memory of her father.
Ripples of pleasure moved outwards from the focus of his attention, and
his tongue in her mouth muddled her mind clearing it of anything but the
sensations she was feeling. She didn’t
want him to stop. But she knew also that
she ought to think it through, without this confusion of lust and pleasure and
affection.
“Wait,” she gasped, “I … it’s too
nice.”
He stopped at once. She could see his erection, straining down
one trouser leg, his boxers and his chinos useless concealment.
“Too noice?” He raised his
eyebrows in amusement and puzzlement.
“Is that possible?”
She looked into his soft brown
eyes, so warm and filled with affection, concern, friendship and love. The eyes muddled her too. They turned her decision-making brain to
mush. All she could feel was the
intense wish to melt into his arms, to go on kissing, to enjoy again that
wonderful sensation of him touching her and pleasuring her. Loving her.
