Luigi saw it in his face.  “He’ll be your friend too, you know.  He’s a top bloke.  He’s kind.  He’s been through pain and loss himself, and it’s made him … better.  I think before Brent killed himself, he was maybe a little arrogant.”  Perhaps, he thought to himself, it was that trace of arrogance which first drew me to him. My need to be humiliated by a straight manly bloke.  Well, he thought with determination, I’m putting that behind me. I’m going to make a success of my relationship with Cody.  I am.

Cody didn’t answer.  He knew Luigi was right.  Despite that, it seemed to him, somewhere in is darkest imaginings, that he was alone, that Philippa had left him, and that Luigi’s heart, whatever he said, was given to another.  I’ve totally screwed up my life, he thought bitterly.  A fuck up.  A failure.

Luigi reached out brushed a finger across Cody’s lips, softly and gently.  His dark olive black eyes were warm and loving.  He didn’t speak, but all the same, Cody felt better.

Majorca Flats -- 378

After Eleanor and Lucasta had gone to bed, the three men stretched out on the sofas still nibbling cheese straws and chips and sipping champagne.  Luigi pulled Cody closer to him and though Cody at first resisted, in the end he rested his head on Luigi’s shoulder.  Jason put his head on Luigi’s stomach.
“The one advantage of being fat, Lou, is that stomachs are a bit softer.  Yours is too flat.  You’re useless as a pillow."
“Too bad so sad.  Eat your heart out straightboy.  At least I’m not a plump little schoolboy like you!"
“This is all muscle!" said Jason patting his own stomach.  “Just solid, steely muscle.  Gayboy."  He turned his head to grin at Luigi and caught Cody’s eye and winked at him.
Cody had never had gay friends.  His friendships with straight men had always been awkward.  They were too remote for him and he was too intense for them.  He was always half falling in love with his male friends.  He didn’t know how to josh and tease like these two were.  He was envious.  And saddened.  What had he been missing all these years?  And what would happen later? They were being kind to him now, but what would happened after a few months.  Would he be discarded?

Majorca Flats -- 320

From Troy Caperton's blog

Don't!" said Jason into Cody's ear, as his tears flowed even faster. “You're with friends, now."  He pulled him closer, his arms firm and comforting.
Come inside, everyone. This calls for more tea. What an exciting day we're having." Eleanor didn't know quite how to deal with this stranger's weeping.
I'll just phone Lou," said Keith.
Cody shook his head.
What? He loves ya! He's worried silly about ya!"

It's just … I … I don't deserve him. I …. oh, God! It's been horrible!" Cody ground out been hiccups and sobs.
Come on," said Jason very gently, treating him as if he were a small boy, not a grown man, as if he himself were still a prefect at school. “Let's go inside."
They crossed back across the road.
As the door closed behind them, a kombi roared up the road towards the high street.
