Jason lay on the edge of the bed in Keith’s flat.  Next to him, between him and Keith, Esmé snored with a cat-like purr.

After finishing the bottle of champagne at the restaurant, Keith had invited them both back to his flat for a nightcap.  He’d poured them small glasses of Cointreau and offered them tea.  No point in coffee: he didn’t have an espresso machine.  Cafés made coffee so much better than he could.

They talked a little, but the real conversation was unspoken.  Each of them could sense the electricity in the air, the joint attraction which drew them together and linked them with wires of desire.  They were reluctant to end this suspended, magical interlude, where so much was promised, where the future seemed potentially so full, and the now so exciting.
Jason had always felt a little uneasy with women.  He had been able to have sex with his girlfriends but it had never been simple, or fun.  But Esmé had been a friend first.  After what she had suffered at the hands of her father, he felt that she needed to be loved and cared for.  He admired her prettiness, the way her eyes shone, the sweet curve of her neck and her breasts, her curly brown hair.

He looked across at Keith, whose face was solemn, and their eyes met and locked.  Then he leaned over and kissed Esmé on her lips.

They didn’t speak.  Taking her hand and reaching out for Keith’s, Jason tugged them through to the bedroom.

Esmé didn’t answer her phone, so Jason left her a message.  She’s probly in a lecture, he thought.  He sent her a text message as well.  He wanted all his friends to be together when he told them.

Esmé was old-fashioned about using her smart-phone in lectures.  She turned it to silent when she was in one.  So she only saw the message when she went to get lunch in one of the uni cafés.  She had a prac until 5, but she could walk from the uni to Brunswick Street and get to the café by 5.30.  She texted back her acceptance.

She wondered what he wanted to tell her.  He was special.  She was in love with Keith but Jason was kind and he had a lovely smile and he treated her as a real person.  Keith and Jason and their friends might not be perfect, but they were incomparably better than her father—and her mother, too.  But she thought more charitably of her mother now.  Even though she was still angry at her mother for not protecting her when she’d been abused, she understood intellectually, if not in her heart, how afraid her mother must have been.  She thought back to an article she’d read in the newspaper, about battered women and how they often went back to their husbands because they had no alternative, financially, or stayed with them because they were afraid.  The article said that nearly a hundred women a year died in domestic violence.  She could believe it.

He moved his mouth away.  She gave a stammering cry.  Was it noYesDon’t?  Even she didn’t know.
“We can try fuckin’ again,” he whispered, his mouth against her ear.  “Oi’ve bain thinkin’.  With a dude, if he’s toight, ya gao more gently.  Ya use a lot of lube.”  He kissed her cunt again, and then her belly button, and then so gently it almost tickled, he bit softly down onto her nipples.  “Ya wanna troi?”
She nodded.
“Turn soideways,” he whispered. He snuggled up against her.  She heard the sound of the condom packet tearing and then the snap as he put in on.  A bottle top clicked, and she felt his hand liquid with lube start to stroke her.  His finger penetrated her and it was so slippery and so gentle it was inside her before she had time to tense up.  He continued moving it very slowly in and out of her, each time softly rubbing her clitoris.  She did not know whether to lie still or give in to the overpowering urge to writhe helplessly as pleasure thrilled through her body.

Keith inserted a second finger and then a third, and still she did not clamp tight.  She was surprised to find herself weeping silently, but could not have said whether it was from happiness or sorrow.  She felt the head of his cock press against her.  He pressed it against her opening, but moved no further.  He pulled away, and she waited, trusting him now with every cell of her body.  She heard the squirt of the lube bottle, and then once again he was pressing against her.  He slid gently into her, and started slow and cautious thrusting.  Once or twice she thought of her father and she inadvertently tightened on him, and one of those times, Keith squeaked in discomfort.  But she drove her father from her mind, and when she climaxed and then felt him make a final deep lunge into her as he too came, her mind was empty of her past.

At the door of the café, after she’d locked up, he kissed her goodbye lightly on the lips, not as a lover, but as a friend.
He’s gay, she told herself as she cycled home.  He’s not in love with me.  He prefers men.  But no matter what she said to herself, in her heart, she believed otherwise.  She cherished her love for him.  Love songs came to have a new meaning.  Seeing a man on the street who looked like him made her heart turn over.
She tried very hard not to let him see what had happened.  At least he is my friend, she thought.  Better than nothing.  A lot better than nothing.
But whatever it was, she was happy.  Happier than she’d been since she was a little girl.  Her happiness coloured her life, changed her face, made her shine.
